 What do you mean by storage?


Storage is the process of keeping the products in a safe place for later use. It can preserve the products from get contaminated or from all that things through which it is fear able that the product get spoil or can damage. Storage can also mean of keeping or reserving materials, goods, or products safely until they are needed for use of sale. It is basically the process of holding the goods in such a proper place and in such a proper condition that they can stay in good quality until it can be used. In storage, it is very important to keep the products in the controlled environment so that it can maintain its quality, safety and usefulness until they are distributed or consumed. 


What is food storage?

Food storage means storing the food in a safe place so that it can be prevented from the spoilage. Food storage means keeping the food in such a proper place and in proper condition so that it can be prevented from any type of spoilage and its quality, taste, color all should be maintained until it is used and eaten. It is the method of preserving the food from any type of microorganisms, any type of microbial growth and any type of environmental impact so that the food stays fresh and safe from spoilage and to extend its shelf life for longer period until it can be used. 


As food is the very basic and the most important and the most necessary component of the life so the storing the food and preventing the food from spoilage is also a very big challenge for the food operator so that it can extend its shelf life a longer period of time so that whenever the consumer used the stored food product they will get fresh and safe food without compromising its nutrients. Food storage is the most important process of storing the food under suitable temperature, humidity and environmental conditions to prevent the food from spoilage, contamination and wastage while keeping its nutrition value and flavor impact. 


Purpose of Food Storage: -

The purpose of food storage is not any different concept but the concept of purpose of food storage is very similar to the definition of food storage which simply means that to store the food in such a place that the food can stay safe from any harmful microorganisms that can spoil the food. The other main purpose of food storage is to maintain the quality, safety and nutritional value of the food for a longer time by keeping it under suitable conditions.  Food storage plays a vital role in the food supply chain. This food supply chain can be started from the production of food ingredients and the processing of that ingredient to prepare the food dish to the distribution and the consumption of that food dishes.

Preservation of food quality: -

The primary and the most basic purpose of the food storage is to be preserving the quality of food because if the food products cannot be stored properly it get spoiled and contaminated that can ruin the food products. So, the primary purpose of the food storage is to preserve the quality of food which includes its taste, texture, aroma, color and nutritional content. The preserving the food products through food storage is not only to maintain the taste of the food but also to maintain the all qualities of the food and in all that qualities aroma is the basic quality because whenever any user can buy any of the food product and can open it so the first and the most basic thing done by the consumer with that particular food product is to take the aroma of the food. If the aroma of the particular food product has pungent smell, then the consumer will not even taste the food and can throw the food in the garbage. 

Preventing the Food from Spoilage: - 

Preventing the food from spoilage is the primary purpose of the food storage. When the food is processed then that processed food contains heat, water and moisture which is fit for eating but after some time these become the reason for the microbial growth in the food item. When the food item comes in the contact with air, water and moisture then after some time it can lead to the microbial growth in the food item that can spoil the food item by changing its taste and color, and the food starts giving the pungent smell. But when we store the food by following the various different methods like refrigerating, drying or keeping the food in the airtight container it can slow down the growth of microorganism in the food that can extend the shelf life of the food and keep the food item fit for eating for very long time. But if the food is not stored properly and it comes in the contact with air and water then it starts the microbial growth and not only starts but the speed of microbial growth is very high as the microorganisms can multiply themselves and can spoil the complete food item in very few minutes. 

Availability of Food during emergencies: -

Another major purpose of the food storage is to ensure the shelf life of the food product so that food can be available for everyone even in emergencies also or even in the shortage of time also. Sometimes this can happen that seasonal changes or mostly the natural disaster or the instant change in the season can ruin the cultivated crop or the crop that have to be cultivated but if food or the grains can be stored properly then it is available to us for all the seasons. The stored food is also very beneficial in the shortage of time because this can be happen mostly in the homes and hostel's with the children that prefer night studying so while studying when they feel hungry then they prefer to eat sometime which they can get in ready form because they don't want to make any type of food item at late night so at that time stored food is very helpful for them.
