What is Butter?

Butter is also a type of dairy product that can be made from the cream. This butter can be obtained by churning the cream that we get from the high fat layer that obtained on the top of the milk. The process of making butter from cream is very easy. To make the butter from the cream we just have to churning the cream continuously and just have to add the little bit of water by adding water the granules of the butter start floating on the butter milk and we just have to gather all the granules of butter with hand or any appliance and can rinse all the Buttermilk from the butter granules. This is the basic process of obtaining butter from the cream and milk. In other words, we can also say that butter can be obtain by separating the butterfat from the butter milk.

Butter mainly contains milk fat, water and milk solids varying in the quantity and from that milk fat is present in high quantity in the butter which is count up to 80% and can contain 16-18% of water and remaining contains the milk solids. The texture of the butter is very rich and smooth and can mostly value for its creamy flavor, creaminess rich aroma and texture that can enhance both sweet and savory dishes. This butter can not only be used only in sweet dishes, but it can also be used in various savory dishes.  


Types of Butter: -

Unsalted Butter: - 

As it already clears from its name that unsalted butter is completely free from the salt as there are not any taste and flavor of the salt can be added. This butter has a pure creamy texture and flavor because this butter can be made from fresh cream without any added salt. The flavor of this butter is sweet and fully creamy. Because of its sweet and creamy flavor this butter is also known as sweet cream butter. This is a type of butter which is completely made from the fresh Pasteurized cream without any added salt which means this butter do not contain salt neither can sparkling nor automatically. 


Uses: -

  • This butter is completely free from salt and can have a sweet and creamy flavor due to which this butter can mostly be used in baking. 
  • Unsalted butter can also be used in sauteing various vegetables, eggs and meats because it gives creamy texture and flavor to various dishes.
  • Unsalted butter can also be ideal for making sauces and can also good in the seasoning like brown butter.
  • Unsalted butter can also be used in spreads and as a base of butter dishes along with lemon, garlic etc to make garlic dip.


Salted Butter: -

Salted butter is also a type of butter that can be made from the cow's milk. This butter can be yellow in color because it can be made from cow's milk and the color of the cow's milk is pale yellow. This butter can be made from fresh Pasteurized milk similar with the unsalted butter the only difference between salted and unsalted butter is that in salted butter a pinch of salt can be added in the cream while churning the cream or milk to form butter. This butter can be made from the fresh pasteurized cream which is made from cow's milk with a small amount of salt in it. The salted butter can contain only 1-2% of salt in the cream. This salt can be added during or after the churning process. 


Uses: -

  • This salted butter can be used as a spreading in various dishes. This salted butter is commonly used as a spread over breads, toasts, parathas and many other dishes. The use of salted butter can add a savory taste and smooth texture in the flavor.
  • The salted butter can also be used in sautéing the vegetables, frying eggs and grilling meats. The salted butter is used to enhance the flavor or the taste of the various dishes like pasta, soups and mashed potatoes. 
  • This butter can also be used in various savory dishes. This salted butter can widely be used in butter chicken, dal makhani, in various paneer dishes and parathas. By adding the salted butter in the various dishes that can adds a rich aroma and taste in curries and gravies.

Clarified Butter: -

Clarified butter is a type of butter which can be obtained from the fresh cream that can be made from the cow's milk. Clarified butter is a form of pure butterfat which is made by melting the regular butter and removing the water and milk solids. When we melt the regular butter and can remove the water and milk solids from that pure butterfat it leaves behind a clear, golden-yellow fat that has a richer flavor, higher smoke point and a longer shelf life than the ordinary butter. 


Uses: -

  • This butter can be widely used in culinary, traditional and as a health practice in many cultures. This butter is used in many countries, but this butter can especially use in India, France and the Middle East. 
  • This clarified butter can be used as high-heat cooking and frying. This clarified butter is perfect for frying, roasting and sautéing the various dishes because this butter does not burn easily. This butter can be commonly used for grilling meats, seafoods and vegetables. 
  • This clarified butter can also be named as ghee in indian languages and in Indian dishes. In India, this clarified butter can be cooked as a type of ghee which has a deeper and nutty texture and aroma. 
  • This clarified butter can also be used as tempering (tadka) the dal, curries and lentils dishes. This tempering especially done in India and in India imagination of any Indian dish without tempering is likely impossible.
