What are Whole Grains?
WHOLE GRAINS: -
- As it clear from the name the whole grains mean the grains that contain all the parts of the plant. Whole Grains are also known as cereal grain. Basically, the plant of while grain can be divided into three parts and the grain which contain all these three parts is known as whole grains.
Parts of the grain kernel is: -
- Bran: - It is the outer layer of the plant that are very rich in fiber and antioxidants.
- Germ: - Germ is the part of the plant that are used to be considered as the nutrient-rich core, that contains vitamins, minerals and healthy fats.
- Endosperm: - Endosperm is the middle layer of the plant that are mostly made up of carbohydrates.
Wholegrains are not stripped of their bran and germ that makes them healthier and more nutritious.
Whole grains are a great source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals that help to improve our digestion and can support the heart health.
1. Brown Rice: -
- Brown rice is a type of cereal grain that contain all the three parts of kernel. Brown rice is little bit different from other rice, the brown rice sheds its outer hull of husk but its bran and germ layer remains as before. Brown rice are gluten free and are very rich in magnesium.
2. Quinoa: -
- Quinoa is another type of rice, but the difference is that the quinoa is a seed not a grain and that seed is to be prepared to make it eatable like rice that's why quinoa can be called as a type of rice. Quinoa is a good source of protein and fiber and is naturally a gluten free.
3. Oats: -
- The oat is basically a species of cereal grains that grown from its seeds. Oats is a domesticated cereal grass that grown from its edible starchy grain. Oats support heart health with beta-glucan fiber.
4. Whole Wheat: -
- Whole wheat refers to wheat flour made from the entire wheat kernel. Whole wheat flour is made by grinding the entire wheat kernel. Whole wheat contains fiber and vitamin B.
5. Barley: -
- Barley is another staple food source for human consumption. It is a type of cereal grain used for food and beverages. Barley has very nutty flavor and chewy texture. Barley is good source of fiber, vitamin and minerals.
Millets: -
- Similar to other crops millets is also a type of whole grain or cereal grain that our cultivated in our country from thousands of the years. Millets are the great source of nutrition, high in fiber, and are very rich in Vitamin, minerals and protein.
