Types of Legumes

What are Legumes? 


Legumes (Pulses and Beans): -

  • The word "Legumes" refer to the "seeds or fruits" of the plant that are usually grow in pods. Legumes are the plant in the Fabaceae family. In other words, Legumes are the plants that produce through pods with seeds inside it. 

  • Legumes are very important sources of proteins, fiber, and nutrients that are very beneficial for us. theses legumes are also valued in agriculture for improving soil fertility through nitrogen fixation. Basically, these legumes can fix the nitrogen portion of the soil that makes or helps the soil to get lost fertility back. 

TYPES OF LEGUMES: -

1. Beans: - 

  • A bean is basically a kidney- shaped seed that we can eat and often used in vegetable, pulsed and in cooking of different dishes in different shapes. A bean is the any seed of the legume family that are used as vegetable for human consumption and animal feed. Beans contain iron, magnesium and plant-based proteins that are helping to regulate the blood sugar level. 


  • Example: - Kidney beans, Black beans, Navy beans and Pinto beans.


2. Lentils: -

  • Lentils are the small, flat edible seed that belong to the legume family. Lentils are often used as pulses that we can eat. Lentils are rich in protein, folate and fiber that support our heart health and digestive function.


  • Example: - Green, Red, Brown and Black lentils.


3. Chickpeas (Garbanzo Beans): - 

  • The chickpea is also a type of bean, but it belongs to the different family. The chickpeas belong to the Fabaceae family. Chickpeas are the great source of protein, fiber and iron which is used in humus and various other dishes.


  • Example: - Black chickpeas, White Garam 


4. Peas: -

  • Peas are another type of food that belong to the legume family. Peas is very similar to the lentils, but the difference is only in their structure, the legumes that produce pods with seeds or beans is called peas. Peas are very rich in protein and fiber which are very beneficial for digestion. 


5.  Soybeans: -

  • Soyabean is also a type of seed which belong to legume family having native to east Asia. Economically, soyabean is the most important bean in the world that provide millions of proteins to us. Soyabean is a complete protein source that provide enough energy or proteins to us.

  • Example: - Tofu, Tempeh.
