Semi-Hard Cheese: -
Semi-Hard cheese is a type of cheese which is best known for their firm texture that's easily sliced because this cheese is not too much dry or not too much crumbly as hard cheese. Semi-Hard Cheese is an aged version of soft cheese. This type of cheese has a firmer texture and have a very deeper profile. This type of cheese is one of the most popular cheeses worldwide. This cheese originates from England, and this cheese becomes sharper and crumblier as it gets ages.
Semi-hard cheese is a variety of cheese that falls between the hard and soft varieties of cheese in terms of texture and firmness. The aged period of all the cheese is different according to its texture and the aged period of semi-hard cheese is between 2 months and 12 months. This cheese can be made from cow's milk, sheep's milk and goat's milk because the variants of this cheese can be available in the market. Because of the variants of the cheese there are uses of this cheese is also different like this cheese can be used in grating, spreading, sliced or in cubed cheese.
Types of Semi-Hard Cheese: -
1. Cheddar Cheese: -
Cheddar cheese is a type of semi-hard cheese because it is a type of cheese whose aging period is from young to Medium Aged. This type of cheese is mainly originated in Somerset in England. This cheese is made from cow's milk that's why the color of this cheese is yellow or slightly orange. Like this cheese can be grown from younger to medium age similarly the flavor of this cheese is also ranges from mild to sharp depending on its age and production method. It has a smooth and slightly waxy texture. Cheddar cheese is popular and widely consumed cheese both in UK and other parts of the world.
Uses: -
- These types of cheese can be used in sandwiches, mac & cheese.
- It can also be used as a gratins and burgers.
2. Edam Cheese: -
Edam cheese is also a type of semi-hard cheese. This cheese is basically round in shape which is pale yellow in color from its inner side and can have a red wax coating from the outside which looks very similar to the apple, but it is completely different from apple. This cheese very well known for its mild, slightly salty and nutty flavor which becomes more pronounced with age. The name of this cheese is named after the Dutch town of Edam.

- It can also be used in sauces and pastries in melted form.
3. Young Manchego: -
Young Manchego cheese is also known as semi cur ado or semi-cured cheese. This cheese is aged for very shorter period of time typically from 3 months. The texture of this cheese is firm but slightly creamy and supple. It also has buttery, nutty and slightly tangy flavor. This cheese is originated in Spain. The color of this cheese is Ivory to pale yellow because this cheese can be made from sheep's milk. This cheese also contains a natural rind which often made with herringbone pattern.
Uses: -
- This cheese can be eaten with quince paste.
- The paste of this cheese is mostly served with olives or crusty bread.
4. Gruyere: -
Gruyere cheese is a type of semi-hard cheese. Gruyere cheese is very popular and versatile cheese. Gruyere cheese can be made from cow's milk, and this cheese can be made from the unpasteurized milk of cattle that can graze on the lush pastures of the Gruyere region of Switzerland. Because this cheese can be made from cow's milk that's why the color of this cheese is pale yellow. The texture of this cheese is firm. When this cheese is young then the texture of this cheese is flexible and creamy. The flavor of this cheese is very nutty, slightly sweet which becomes more earthy with age. This cheese has hard, natural and brownish-gray rind inside the cheese.
