What is Plant-Based Food?

  • Plant Based Food are the food that we get from plants. Basically, we can say that plant-based food is the food that primarily focuses on the food that are derived from plants including all the parts of the plant like stem, leaves, seeds, roots as well as leaves also. 

  • These foods provide essential nutrients such as fiber, vitamins, minerals and plant-based proteins that support overall health while being sustainable for the environment. 


Categories of Plant-Based Food Sources: -


A. Vegetables: -

  • Vegetables are the edible parts of the plant that are mostly used to consume as a meal. We ca eat various parts of vegetable plant like root, stem, their flower, its leaves and so on. we can take these parts as a mela or can be eaten as raw. we can intake these vegetables as a raw or in the processed way. 


  • Vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber and other nutrients that make them an essential part of a healthy diet. These vitamins and minerals are very beneficial for our body which provides us energy and help them to make us fit and healthy. 


    B. Fruits: -

  • Fruit is defined as the part of the plant that develops from a flower and can contain the plant's seed. Fruit is an edible part of the plant that can bear seed. We can get various types of fruits from the plants and trees that typically contains the seed. 


  • Fruits are the good source of vitamins, minerals, fiber as well as proteins that helps to provide us energy. These fruit proteins are very beneficial for human body as it gives energy that help us to do pour regular work.

C. Legumes (Pulses and Beans): -

  • The word "Legumes" refer to the "seeds or fruits" of the plant that are usually grow in pods. Legumes are the plant in the Fabaceae family. In other words, Legumes are the plants that produce through pods with seeds inside it. 

  • Legumes are very important sources of proteins, fiber, and nutrients that are very beneficial for us. theses legumes are also valued in agriculture for improving soil fertility through nitrogen fixation. Basically, these legumes can fix the nitrogen portion of the soil that makes or helps the soil to get lost fertility back. 

D. Whole Grains: -

  • As it clear from the name the whole grains mean the grains that contain all the parts of the plant. Whole Grains are also known as cereal grain. Basically, the plant of while grain can be divided into three parts and the grain which contain all these three parts is known as whole grains.

Parts of the grain kernel is: -

  • Bran: - It is the outer layer of the plant that are very rich in fiber and antioxidants.
  • Germ: - Germ is the part of the plant that are used to be considered as the nutrient-rich core, that contains vitamins, minerals and healthy fats.
  • Endosperm: - Endosperm is the middle layer of the plant that are mostly made up of carbohydrates.
Wholegrains are not stripped of their bran and germ that makes them healthier and more nutritious.


  • Whole grains are a great source of fiber, vitamins, and minerals that help to improve our digestion and can support the heart health.  

E. Nuts and Seeds: -

1. Nuts: -

  • In botanical term, a nut is a hard-shelled fruit that contain seed. The outer covering of the nut is very thick that is very difficult to break and after breaking that covering, we get a seed inside the shell and that shell is eatable. 

  • Example: - Almonds, Walnuts, Cashews and Peanut.

2. Seeds: - 

  • Seeds are basically an edible part of the plant that belong to different family. A seed of the plant is enclosed in seed coat which is the protective outer covering of the seed which is called as teste. These seeds are very rich in nutrients, vitamins, protein and omega-3 etc. 


  • Example: - Chia Seeds, Flax Seeds, Sunflower Seed and Pumpkin Seed.

F. Plant-Based Oils: -

  • Plants based oils are the oils that are extracted from the seeds, nuts, fruits or many other parts of the plant. These types of oil can be extracted from many parts of the plant that are very beneficial for us. these types of oil can be used for cooking, baking, salad dressing, in skin cares and other products also. 

  • These types of oil are very rich in healthy fats, especially unsaturated fats, and may also contains essential nutrients like vitamin E and Omega-3 as well as fatty acids also. These Plant-Based Oils are very beneficial for us.
